Chapter Seven

The eel squirmed in Erika's hand, a tube of solid muscle over sturdy bones that wiggled and warped in her grip. It tried to snap its thousand teeth at her, swinging its long jaws around for anything it could grab, dark eyes rolling in its head. It was at least as long as Erika, body tapering slowly into a thin, almost transparent fin in the back that wiggled to and fro to push the creature through the water. Its scales were surprisingly smooth. Erika had expected a rougher texture given its electricity and found the fish difficult to hold.

But despite its snapping teeth and sparking personality, the other eels seemed to understand that Erika was deadly serious, so they swam ahead, leading her and Maxwell up and over the seaweed forest, deeper into the wild ocean, toward a dark gash in the ocean floor.

Though the forest stretched as far as her eye could see along the ravine, there appeared to be nothing across the yawning gap. Just a desolate wasteland of rock and the occasional scraggly weed. No fish crossed over to the other side either, staying in the semi-cultivated reefs between the city and the forest where they could easily

dart for cover.

Dark shadows patrolled the seaweed forest, larger than sharks, and Erika found herself grateful the worst thing she'd found was a handful of eels.

But the closer they swam to the ravine, the harder the current pushed back against them. Erika grit her teeth as she kicked, the muscles in her tail starting to burn with the effort. If she took a second to rest, she dropped back quickly, and it took even more effort to recover.

Maxwell grabbed her free hand, the one not full of electric eel. His powerful tail kicked beside hers and she found herself tugged forward into his wake, where it was easier to swim. She squeezed his hand, both thanks and comfort, that she couldn't say out loud, and he squeezed back with a wink over his shoulder. The current was so strong, words would probably fly away, anyway.

The eels didn't seem to have any trouble against the rushing water. They twisted and braided within each other, swimming forward like a single fish with many tails rather than individuals. Their glowing purple eyes blinked out of sync and their long jaws full of teeth always appeared to be laughing. Erika wrinkled her nose at the one wiggling in her hand. The banana eel at the entrance to Ariel's cove was nothing like these dangerous beasts.

Then they were descending, dropping over the trailing edge of the seaweed forest, headed straight for the inky darkness of the abyss. Coral and weeds waved their fronds and leaves over the edge of the ravine as if testing the water before they took a leap, and when Maxwell and Erika swam down, Erika saw a dozen small fish hiding in the coral at the cliff edge, their large eyes blinking and seeing all. Whatever secrets the depths held, those little fish knew, and they weren't telling.
